Defense system for neuronal oxidative stress
Glutathione (GSH) is the major neuroprotective molecule against oxidative stress causing neurodegeneration such as Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease. The rate-limiting substrate for neuronal GSH synthesis is cysteine, because neurons cannot uptake GSH itself. Therefore, the regulation of neuronal cysteine uptake is important. and we are currently investigating this issue.
