Speech of Dr. Okinaga |
I am delighted to announce that Teikyo University and Harvard University
have agreed to extend the Teikyo-Harvard Program for another 10 years.
Over the past decade, under the fruitful collaboration of the Teikyo-Harvard Program, both universities have made remarkable achievements.
We have trained a number of the best and brightest young scientists,
published several books, and organized influential meetings.
One of the direct outcomes of this collaboration is the establishment
of the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine in Teikyo, which is officially
recognized and supported by the Ministry of Education of the Japanese government.
In addition to the collaboration of both universities, there has been
participation and support from the University of Cambridge and the University
of Oxford, many other organizations and individuals to the program.
I would like to express our special appreciation to them.
During the last 10 years, there have been numerous milestone progresses in biomedical sciences.
The sequencing of the human genome and animal cloning are a few to mention.
These progresses in biomedical sciences have had a great impact on our
lives.
However, we are still suffering from infectious diseases such as AIDS
and SARS, and we also see many people killed by disasters and in the battlefield.
Thus, the original mission of the Teikyo-Harvard Program to tackle the
world health problems through our partnership is not completed.
But rather, the need for the international academic collaboration to
achieve health for all is ever increasing.
I hope that the Teikyo-Harvard Program will continue to provide the basis for our universities to work together and make even more flourishing achievements in its second decade.
I'm now 70 years old, but I will try my best to manage to live to see
them in mentally healthier condition.
Furthermore, I ask you all to join and support.
Thank you.
