What is Candida auris?

Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant pathogen associated with nosocomial outbreaks in intensive care settings worldwide. Isolation of C. auris was reported in more than 35 countries/territories over the five continents. Phylogenetic analyses showed a geographyical clustering of different isolates into 5 clades. Infections are usually characterized by high overall mortality and antifungal resistance. Identification of the fungus based on traditional methods has proven to be unsuitable, as they often fail to detect C. auris correctly. Automated identification systems popularly used in clinical laboratories, commonly misidentify C. auris with other yeast. Providing an accurate and fast detection of C. auris is a key factor for controlling its prevalence and preventing further outbreaks.

Introduce our Center

The Candida auris Reference Center (CARC) is a BSL-2 research and educational facility belongs to Teikyo University, Tokyo, Japan. The center is well equipped with cutting-edge research tools and instruments. CARC deals with a wide range of yeast and filamentous fungi of medical importance. In addition to the research activities, it offers multiple services to all colleagues around the globe. Our main reason for establishing CARC is to raise awareness against C. auris and provide accurate and reliable identification of the pathogen.

CARC is looking toward promoting international cooperation and strengthen data sharing regarding C. auris in an effort to control the fungus and prevent further outbreaks within medical establishments worldwide.
