Eiji Yano, MD, MPH, DMSc
Visiting professor of Epidemiology / Occupational and Environmental Health






Professor Eiji Yano graduated from University of Tokyo, Faculty of Medicine in 1973 and enrolled in the residency program of general internal medicine at the Tokyo University Hospital and Mitsui Memorial Hospital. He started his academic carrier as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Tokyo University Hospital, specialized in purine metabolism and gout. In 1978 he moved to the Department of Public Health in the same university and had an opportunity to join the study on health effects of volcanic ash from Mount Sakurajima, in Kagoshima. Being awarded research fellowship from International Agency for Research on Cancer, he spent one year in UK at the MRC Pneumoconiosis Unit and performed laboratory studies on the biological effect of mineral fibers. Between 1983 and 1984, he enrolled in the Master of Public Health degree program at Harvard School of Public Health.

In 1984, he was appointed as an Associate Professor at Teikyo University School of Medicine and was promoted to a full professor in 1995. As a faculty of Teikyo University, he has developed the case method learning of public health and performed experimental and epidemiological studies on asbestos and air pollution in collaboration with Sichuan University in China and Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. Initiated from his proposal, Teikyo University created an academic collaboration program with Harvard University in 1993. Under the program, Teikyo-Harvard Symposia have been held every 2-3 years in Tokyo, Boston and in England. In 1999 Ministry of Education, Government of Japan granted nine hundred million yen fund to his proposal to establish the Teikyo EBM Center. In 2009, as the conclusion of the 7th Teikyo-Harvard Symposium, Teikyo University and Harvard University agreed to create a school of public health in Teikyo University. In 2011, Teikyo University Graduate School of Public Health (Teikyo SPH) started as the fourth but the first independent school of public health in Japan.

In September 2016, the 48th Conference of Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health will be held in Teikyo University in conjunction with the 10th Teikyo-Harvard Symposium and he is the organizing chair of the conference.
