Educational Objectives

 

 The Graduate School of Public Health, in accordance with the spirit of its founding, protects people’s lives and promotes their health, while contributing to the sustainable development of a sound healthcare system, the continuous improvement of the quality of healthcare, and the creation of a society that maintains good health.

 In order to achieve this goal, the department trains highly-skilled professionals who are able to solve problems based on scientific judgment from a leadership position for various public health issues. It also aims to train senior managers and leaders of public health who have both advanced practical skills and leadership skills to supervise and guide activities to protect people’s lives, such as public health and medical activities.

 The educational objective of the Graduate School is to contribute to society through such human resource development in public health. Doctoral Program of Public Health, in accordance with the objectives of the Graduate School of Public Health, requires students to acquire the ability to conduct scientific analysis of new problems in response to a changing and developing society and science and technology, and to present, practice, and evaluate the results and solutions based on scientific evidence. In addition, the program aims to train senior managers and senior leaders who possess the leadership, management, and communication skills required to achieve such results.

 

Diploma Policy

 

 In the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Public Health, in accordance with the objectives of the Graduate School of Public Health, it is essential to acquire the ability to conduct scientific analysis of new problems in response to a changing and developing society and science and technology, and to present, practice, and evaluate the results and solutions based on scientific evidence. In addition, we aim to train senior managers and senior leaders who possess the leadership, management, and communication skills required to achieve such goals. Therefore, in the Doctoral Program of Public Health, the degree will be awarded to those who have acquired the following abilities from the perspective of such senior managers and senior leaders, have completed the prescribed credits, and have passed the dissertation review and examination.

 

 

The graduates have

 

  1.  Ability to integrate the five core areas of public health (epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioral sciences, health policy and management, and occupational and environmental health) and lead cross-disciplinary organizations and activities to solve problems in the actual field of public health.
  2.  Ability to conduct scientific analysis of new problems in response to a changing and developing society and science and technology, and to present, implement, and evaluate solutions based on scientific evidence.
  3. Possess competencies such as leadership, management, and communication skills required of professionals in leadership positions in the practice of public health.
  4. In order to protect people’s lives and improve their health, and to contribute to the sustainable development of a sound public health care system and the continuous improvement of the quality of medical care, they have the ability to solve problems based on scientific judgment and to supervise and guide the activities of various public health issues from a leadership position.
  5. Ability to practice public health activities from a leadership position based on an understanding of the position of people in physically, psychologically, and socially vulnerable situations.
  6. Ability to practice public health activities from a leadership position with a global perspective.
  7.  Developed comprehensive abilities and qualities that can contribute to changes in society, organizations, and healthcare issues through the above 1 to 6.

 

 

 

Curriculum Policy

 

In order to acquire the knowledge and skills required for the awarding of degrees, the curriculum of the professional degree program is organized according to the following policies.

  1. In order to acquire an essential level of knowledge and skills required of public health professionals as an international standard, the curriculum is organized in accordance with the accreditation standards of the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) of the U.S. Public Health Education Association and consists of five courses: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Health Policy and Management, and Occupational and Environmental Health.
  2.  To cultivate epidemiological thinking and public health mindset to understand human beings in relation to society and environment, lectures and exercises of “Epidemiology” and “Biostatistics” as well as “Public Health Ethics” are required subjects regardless of the image of human resources to be cultivated.
  3. In order to acquire the ability to respond to problems in the field and to contribute to practice in the field, we take a step beyond the theoretical public health education and focus on practical education through case method exercises, group discussions, and field practice, and provide literacy education through “Introduction to Survey and Research Methods.” In addition to the following seminars and practical training courses, we also offer internship courses. Capstone project is required to systematize knowledge to acquire the ability to return it to the field of practice.
  4. In order to acquire the qualities and abilities (competencies) and problem-solving skills required of public health professionals to respond to a wide range of and diverse issues in public health, subjects such as “Capstone project” and “Leadership and Management Theory” are provided.
  5.  In order to acquire a global perspective by experiencing the latest situations and cutting-edge knowledge overseas, we have established “Special Sessions (winter intensive courses)” by professors from Harvard University, Oxford University, and Cambridge University, who are world authorities in each of the five areas. In addition, there are lecture courses in English (“Healthcare Management” and “Universal Health Coverage & Aging Society”), which are conducted with the participation of students from partner schools mainly in Asian countries.
